Stand-Up Pouches

The stand-up pouch, or doypack, is the format that made flexible packaging look premium. It stands square on shelf without a jar or a carton to hold it up, gives you a large uninterrupted print area, and ships flat before it is filled. We manufacture stand-up pouches in South Africa with resealable zippers, tear notches, hanging Euroslots, windows and matte or gloss finishes, in clear, metallised and high-barrier structures chosen around what your product actually needs.

Why brands choose stand-up pouches

A stand-up pouch earns its shape from the bottom gusset. That extra panel folds flat while the pouch is empty and opens out into a base once the pack is filled, so the pouch stands upright and square on shelf without a tray, jar or outer carton holding it up. It is one structural detail, and it is why the format has taken over so many categories: the pack presents like rigid packaging and ships like film.

The face of the pouch is one large, uninterrupted print area. There is no label edge, no seam running through the artwork and no curved surface distorting the design, so the brand reads cleanly from across an aisle. Because the artwork is reverse printed — the ink sits between the layers of the laminate rather than on the outside — the print is protected by the film itself and will not scuff or scratch its way through filling, distribution and handling.

The commercial argument is just as strong. Empty pouches arrive flat and nest, so a pallet holds far more packaging than the same pallet of jars or tins, and the filled pack weighs a fraction of a rigid alternative. That saving carries all the way through the chain: less warehouse space for empties, lower freight cost on finished goods, and less material going out of the door with every unit sold.

Options and features

A resealable zipper turns a single-use pack into a store-and-reuse one, which matters for anything a customer works through over days or weeks — coffee, nuts, pet treats, protein powder. Above the zipper we can add a tear notch so the pack opens cleanly by hand, without scissors, and without tearing into the zipper track and ruining the reseal.

A hanging Euroslot lets the pack merchandise on a hook rather than a shelf, which is often the difference between getting a listing and not. Rounded corners soften the outline, take the sharp points off the pack and are a common request on premium and gifting product.

Finish is a brand decision. A gloss film pushes colour and looks bright and appetising under retail lighting; a matte film reads quieter and more premium and holds a soft-touch look that photographs well. Either can carry a clear or frosted window — a narrow strip, a shaped panel or a large front area — so the customer can see the product itself. For whole-bean coffee, mixed nuts or colourful confectionery, that window does more selling than any photograph of the contents ever will.

Film structures and barrier

There is no single best film. The structure is chosen around the product, not the other way round, and the first question is always what actually degrades it — light, oxygen, moisture, aroma loss, or fat turning rancid.

A clear PET/LLDPE laminate gives strength on the outside and a reliable seal on the inside while leaving the product completely visible. Where light and oxygen are the problem, a metallised layer blocks both and gives a bright silver surface that can be printed over or left exposed. Where the requirement is the highest barrier available — long shelf life, aggressive aromas, high-fat product or export distribution — a high-barrier PVDC-coated PET or a dual lamination is the structure to specify. These do the work foil used to do, without foil's tendency to stress crack where the pack is flexed, creased or knocked about in distribution, and the barrier holds for the life of the pack.

Tell us the product, the fill weight, the shelf life you are targeting and how the pack will be distributed and stored, and we will specify the structure around it. Contact us with your requirement and we will come back with a recommendation rather than a catalogue.

FAQs

Common questions

What is the minimum order quantity?
1 000 units for stock sizes. Custom unprinted sizes start at 5 000 units, and printed stand-up pouches at 30 000 units upwards depending on size. We can't take orders under 1 000 or short printed runs.
What are your lead times?
Stock sizes are almost always available, so ask us to check current stock. Custom unprinted sizes take roughly 2 to 6 weeks, and printed runs roughly 6 to 8 weeks.
Are stand-up pouches resealable?
Yes — a press-to-close zipper is one of the most common options on the format. We usually pair it with a tear notch above the zipper so the pack opens cleanly by hand and the reseal still works afterwards.
What sizes are stand-up pouches available in?
We hold a wide range of stock sizes and we are fully geared for custom size production. Sizing depends on fill weight and product density rather than volume alone, so contact us with your requirement — the product, the fill weight and how it is filled — and we will size the pouch around it.
Can you print stand-up pouches with our own artwork?
Yes. We print flexo and gravure, and on laminated structures we reverse print so the artwork sits inside the laminate and cannot scuff. Send us your artwork and specification and we will advise on the process and the structure.
Which film should I choose for my product?
It depends on what degrades it. Clear PET/LLDPE where visibility matters most, metallised where oxygen and light are the issue, high-barrier PVDC-coated PET or a dual lamination where you need the longest shelf life. Contact us with your product, target shelf life and distribution conditions and we will specify it.
